Rome

Use the following link and your notes to help you answer all three questions about the Roman Empire

http://www.teacheroz.com/romans.htm

1. How different would Europe be today if Carthage had won the Second Punic War?

2. How does the treatment of slaves in Rome differ from the treatment of slaves in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece or America before the Civil War?

3. Compare the growth of Rome to another great empire, such as Alexander the Great, Gupta or Mauryan Empire, Ancient Egypt or the Han Dynasty.

If Carthage won the Second Punic war more then likely Europe would not be the same. Whether it is culturally or religiously ,it would be modified to be more like North Africa. Rather then being dominated by the Catholic belief most people would be followers of the Islamic religion. In present day Europe there is a conflict about people of the Islam religion moving to Europe and rather then integrating with the customs they retain their own. If the second Punic war was won by Carthage this issue would not be present because the Islamic customs would already be dominant. Another change that could be absorbed is the culture itslef. It would require less western attires and more traditional wear.

The treatment of slaves in Rome differs from the treatment of slaves in Mesopotamia because they weren’t treated as brutal. In Rome Slaves were beat and if they died they were replaced. In Mesopotamia one became a slave mainly because the individual was in debut or was a prisoner of war. The debtors were kept alive to pay back the money and the slaves from war still were not beat as horrible because they were needed for labor.

Ancient Rome and Alexander the Great both faced much prosperity. Alexander the Great not only used his strength but also smart tactics in order to prevail in war and conquer or befriend different lands. Rome also allied different clans or cities in order to expand its rule. This not only helped it in war but also economically. In both cases the growth of space not only allowed a larger army but also more natural resources which can be traded or used to make other products. Caesar, who was a major leader in the Roman Empire, also used some of Alexander the Great’s tactics in order to expand the Empire.

  2. Europe would be significantly different if Carthage had won the second Punic War. A Carthaginian general by the name of Hannibal almost captured Rome. He led his army through the inclement weather of the Alps and traveled on elephants. Hannibal could've defeated Rome but ended up returning home instead and was later invaded by Roman soldiers. If it weren't for Hannibal returning home, Europe wouldn't be what it is today. Instead of the language being Latin, it might be the native tongue of Carthage. Also, the religion would not be Catholic beliefs, instead it might be of Islamic influence. So, if Carthage had won the second Punic War, Europe wouldn't be what it is today.

The treatment of slaves in Rome differs from the treatment of slaves in Greece. In Rome, people become slaves from a very young age until the age of 35. Citizens became slaves for many reasons and when they were declared slaves, they would be beat and punished for different reasons. In Greece, Messinians were turned into agricultural slaves called helots. The labor was long and hard and helots always lived close to subsistence.

Ancient Rome and Alexander the Great both encountered growth within their socities. In Ancient Rome, allies helped to make rome more prosperous. The developing government and economy also influenced the growth of Rome. Alexander the Great prospered by using his wit and strength to conquer regions. This helped him in war and economically also.

  3. If Carthage had won the second Punic war, Europe would be different in many ways. First, the area may have been dominated by the Islamic faith instead of the Roman Catholic religion. Also, the area would culturally and politically been more like North Africa. It would be more like North Africa because Hannibal could have won the war if he had not returned to North Africa to help defend his native land. His cultural ways would have influenced the area. Another difference is the trading routes may have been different causing the cross cultural encounters to be different. This would cause different areas to interact and influence Carthage. So, if Carthage had won the second Punic War, the area would have been different culturally, politically, and the religion would have been different.

Slaves in Rome were different from Mesopotamian slaves. In Rome, people became slaves at a young age and they were only released by death or manumission which is when an individual owner will release the slave. Manumission usually occurred when a slave turned 35 because that was the common life-span for Romans. Also, Roman slaves were beaten and punished often; this treatment and ways of being enslaved are different from those of Mesopotamia. In Mesopotamia, a person became a slave if they were a prisoner of war or they were in debt. A slave in Mesopotamia was not beaten and punishments were severe but did not stop the slave from working. In Mesopotamia the slaves were released when they paid off their debt or died.

Rome grew like Alexander the Great grew his empire. Both used tactics to win wars and help their economies grow. Through tactics, Alexander conquered many areas and put them under his rule. Rome conquered many areas and claimed the land and allowed each of them to be city-states. Both empires economies flourished because of the large land area that the empire held under its control. The different city-states and areas were able to trade with each other so that each economy had what it needed to survive. Also, leaders in Rome, like Caesar, used some of Alexander the Great’s ways to conquer and govern the areas. This influenced Rome to be more like Alexander the Great’s empire.

  4. I believe that if Carthage won the second punic war Europe would be different instead of the catholic belief people would be influenced by the islamic religion. Everything would be more like the area of North Africa. A general named Hannibal almostb seized Rome but instead returned home. Therefore, religious, cultural, and political views would have been different if the war was won by Carthage.
The treatment of slaves in Rome and the Mesopotamia differ. For example, in Rome innocent people were captured as slaves and treated badly. A slave was dismissed ny death or their individual master's order. However, in the Mesopotamia a person was captured as a slave for being in dept. The slaves were dismissed when they paid off their dept.
There was growth in Ancient Rome as well as the society of Alexander the great. Alexander had an enourmous amount of strength which allowed him to conquer regions. Rome also conquered many areas and created city-states to expand its rule. Both economies of the empires enlarged.

  5. If Carthage had won the Punic Wars there is a possibility that Europe would no longers exist on the map. If could be named something an be a bigger extension of Africa. There might not be any English speaking countries. Ther could be in change in type of religon that was originally there. Certain countries founded by European countries later on might not exist today.
Slaves in Rome were could be beaten to death and be replaces easily . In, Mesopotamia slaves were not killed because they wanted slaves for work. Some people were not slaves for long because they eventually pay off their debt. In Rome you were a slaves permanently and there was not way to get out of it.
Alexander the Great's empire and Roman empire were constantly conquering other areas. They were both expanding constantly and so was their population. They both used tactics for conquering other areas around the region. They both gained wealth from conquering other areas.

  6. If Carthage had won them Second Punic war it would have dramatically affected the influence on Europe, such as how the common belief would go from Roman Catholic to Islamic. Besides this more influences on Europe would have come from Carthage than Rome. I also believe that this have affected the types of people you would find in Europe, because people from North Africa would start to migrate up to Europe from Africa. Another thing is that there may have been more interactions with the Carthage people by trading and communications. Lastly, I believe that if Hannibal had conquered Rome, he would have changed their beliefs and enforced his, and that the people of Rome would start becoming more Semitic.

Slave in Rome were different from Mesopotamian slaves. Roman Slaves were important to Rome because they were vital to the economy,(even though they were beaten),because the wealthy people of Rome would not have been able to live how they wanted to without having slaves.Once bought a slave was a slave for life, when a slave was bought they were picked at young ages and usually, but not mandatory, they were released at the age of 35 by the owner's manumission. Also if a slaved died, the Romans would easily replace them. Sometimes it was so bad that if two slaves had children, they would kill the children themselves rather than let them become slaves. In Mesopotamia a person would become a slave when they were in debt or owed something they could not afford to pay back. Unlike Rome, Mesopotamian slaves were freed as soon as they paid their debts and they were not killed.

The growth of Rome was similar to that of Alexander the Great's empire due to the fact that both areas conquered a huge amount of space in time. Even though Alexander had great strength, he also had a superior skill to devise strategies and tactics to use on the battlefield that helped him conqueror new regions,Rome also conquered a lot of areas by sometimes using brute force and tactics. The Romans maintained their empire by creating city-states in the conquered regions and by putting people into slavery. Both empires dominated due to the large area they had under their control and because of the trade routes they conquered also.

In Conclusion, If Carthage had won the Second Punic war it would had changed the area of Europe in religion, trade, and cultural influences. Slaves were treated differently in Rome than Mesopotamia because of how people viewed them in their areas. The growth of the Roman Empire was similar to Alexander the Great's empire because of how fast they conquered and how they maintained it.

  7. If Carthage would have won the second Punic War then Rome would be very different in many different areas. Rome would not practice the Roman Catholic religion as they do on a normal basis. Also the language wouldn't be the same. Some sort of Carthinagian language would be in use instead of Latin, which is used today. Also, the type of government could be different. This could have also shaped the economy, social class structure, the lands they conquered, how slaves were treated, etc. These examples show how the Roman empire would have been changed religiously, economically, politically, and structurely.

The slaves in Rome weren't treated nearly the same as the slaves in Mesopotamia. In Mesopotamia the slaves were slaves for reasons such as: P.O.W's, to pay off debt, or being caught for stealing. The slaves in the Roman empire were treated harshly. They had to do many rigorous tasks and if they were not done at a fast rate or done 100% correctly they would be beaten. The Romans also didn't have any mercy when beating their slaves, they would often be killed and thrown out. Those are the differences between the Roman and Mesopotamian treating of the their slaves.

The Roman empire and Alexander the Great's empire were very similar. They both were constantly expanding their empires by conquering diferent areas and increasing their populations as they went along. Also Caesar did a great thing within his Roman empire by creating city-states. This allowed him to trade within other parts of his region. Also the places he conquered mostly contributed to the types of goods they needed to add to their agricultural produce, etc. Alexander also probably used the goods of his conquered lands as well.

If Carthage had won the Punic war, possibly there'd be no Europe. Instead, it would be an extension of Africa because Carthage was part of Africa. It is highly likey that the area of Rome would run on Hannibal's ways because he had already nearly captured Rome and this would be the same if he had not returned to his native land. Also, there would have major influences of North African culture on the area of Europe. For instance, there probably would have been a large spread of Islam and North African languages. Basically, the culture of Europe would be different from what it is today.

Slavery was different in Rome than it was in Mesopotamia. In Mesopotamia, you were a slave if you were a prisoner of war, an indebted individual, or convicted criminal. For a Mesopotamian slave, all that had to be done to be released was to pay off debt. However in Rome, where a third of the population was slaves, this was not the case. In Rome, becoming a slave was as easy being sold into slavery by the eldest male in your family.Being a slave was permanent unless you died or by manumission.

Like Alexander the Great, Rome conquered vast regions. Rome used strategies like Alexander the Great to expand its empire. For example, Caesar a Roman leader, used strategies of Alexander to govern Rome. In both empires, the economies prospered because of the expansion of the empires.

  9. The Carthaginians would have brought a completely different culture to Europe altogether. Artistically, who knows how we would have developed, and our cultures would be extremely different. From a genealogic viewpoint, those of us with European backgrounds possess a Roman ancestor in some aspect of our family tree, without that, how would we look today? The languages would have also been affected, as the Carthaginians surely did not adopt Latin as their lingua franca to spread to all of the continent. Finally, the Carthiginian culture would have left a vast and often strange difference in modern day culture.

While the Greeks had many slaves, the slaves were not entirely alone. The treatment of slaves as chattel was not uncommon, and while it may have been disheartening to many slaves, they certainly developed a large enough class so that being a slave was not without its own social ring and class. The Romans took good care of slaves, although they worked them as human robots in many ways. The Romans never took into consideration the feelings of the slaves and instead undertook the use of slaves as a way to complete massive projects and the like. No wonder the slaves one day led a revolt, that while a failure, was very succesful.

The Roman Empire grew similarly to the empire of Alexander the Great. In example, the growth of a nearly democratic city was a shock, and with their turn to empire, Rome became a killing machine. The Romans lost any and all political strife with their victory over Carthage. The Roman armies had every reason to want to conguer for the Roman republic, and it was their strong allegiance to Rome, like the Greeks' loyalty to Alexander, that overcame most "impossible" factors and brought about the majority of Roman conquest.

  10. If Rome lose the Punic Wars, we would be in a much worse place. With out Rome Italy would have never existed, without Italy all of the Renaissance's intelligent mind, we would not have the modern math we have today. With out Rome there would be no Christianity, so there would be no puritans seeking refuge in the new world, so no America.
In Rome slaves were treated brutally, they were beaten savagely and were slaves for life. Mesopotamian slaves were slaves nonetheless but the treatment was less horrific they were never killed for disobedience.
Alexander The Great rose to power by being on good terms with his people and conquering lands. The Han work in a similar way by spreading out by conquering lands and building an empire. Both were successful in their own way.

  13. Had Carthage won the second Punic War, the world today would be immensely different. The Islamic faith would have spread across the globe, rather than Christianity. Unlike today, Europe would have resembled north Africa in it's cultural aspects. Hannibal would have spread his customs all over the empire, affecting the rest of the continent at that time, and for future generations.

Only debtors or war prisoners were enslaved in Mesopotamia, unlike Rome. Although slaves had a chance of freedom through Manumission in Rome, there treatment was horrendous. Many slaves were battered and beaten. They were treated terribly in comparison to Mesopotamian slaves who were freed after paying off their debts.

Ancient Rome and Alexander the Great each were very successful. Alexander the Great utilized his amazing war tactics and brilliance to defeat all enemies and conquer neighboring lands. Rome friended other regions to further its rule. These other lands contributed to their economics, politics, and society overall.

  14. If Carthage had won the second Punic war, Latin might not have become as popular and instead of it being catholic it might have been Islamic. There were strong roman forces near the city which would have arrived before Hannibal an the city defenses would have made it hard for Hannibal to take over. But we know that Hannibal's chosen strategy failed and the Carthage lost.
Some Egyptians were sold into slavery because of debts or sold themselves to escape poverty. In ancient Rome trade in slaves was often in the hands of rich merchants and took place in slave markets, but during the pharaonic times no slave markets existed for the Egyptians. In Rome Some slaves were soldiers who had been captured in wars, while others were the children of slave parents.
Alexander inherited a strong kingdom and experienced army,he broke the power of Persia in a series of decisive battles. As the Romans won there battles they gained control of the lands around Rome and gradually gained land and power.

    1. How different would Europe be today if Carthage had won the Second Punic War?
Carthage would still be standing and a lot of the roman views would not have been spread. The catholic views would not be as widespread, there would be more Islamic. The government would be different, along with the language and other cultural aspects.

    2. How does the treatment of slaves in Rome differ from the treatment of slaves in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece or America before the Civil War?
In Rome slavery was a lot like that in America before the civil war, slaves were sold in slave markets and beaten sometimes till death. In other places Slaves were mostly people working off a debt to another person or a prisoner of war.

    3. Compare the growth of Rome to another great empire, such as Alexander the Great, Gupta or Mauryan Empire, Ancient Egypt or the Han Dynasty.
Alexander the great and Rome were alike, they both took over the surrounding areas and built a great empire. Alexander did this in the Persia. Rome conquered all around the Mediterranean sea.

  16. If Carthage had won the second Punic war I believe that Europe would be different in numerous ways than it is now. One way is instead of the Roman Catholic religion dominating the Islamic religion would have. Another way would be that of North Africa. This would have happened if Hannibal would have seized Rome and not have returned home. His cultural ways would have influenced the area. The last difference would be the trading routes. It the trade routes were different than more interaction would have been active with Carthage. Therefore, if Carthage would have won things would be different religiously and culturally.
In Rome, people were given the title” slave” at a young age which could only be escaped by death or the releasing from their owner. At the age of 35 is when being released from their owner took place usually because that age was their life expectancy. In Mesopotamia, a person became a slave if they were a prisoner of war or they were in debt. People were called slaves in Mesopotamia if they were a prisoner or had any debt. Slaves were only released if they died or managed to pay off their debt. The definition of a slave differed in various ways between Rome and Mesopotamia.
Both Rome and Alexander the Great conquered large areas over time which caused much growth. Alexander had many great power and great tactics to assist him during battles which helped conquer new areas. Rome had also gained control over an enlarged amount of area by sometimes activating tactics they had. The Romans kept control over their empire by slavery and forming city-states in the regions that were and by conquered. Both empires had enormous amounts of growth by the amount of land they conquered.

1.If Carthage won the second Punic War the history of Europe would have had a dramatic difference. The cultural infulence in the area would have differed and the Europeans would most likely have practiced and Islamic faith instead of Christianity. Trading routes may have also have been altered which further increases the chance of the culture being different.
2.Yes, Roman slaves were treated differently. Roman slaves were treated as property and it was not a big deal if they hurt or killed them, but in other societies this did not apply. Other societies, such as Mesopotamians, only became slaves if they owed debt, broke the law, or were a prisoneer. In those societies it was possible for you to work as slave for a while then get released.
3.Rome and Alexander the Great simimarly developed great empires. Leaders in Rome often times utalized some of Ceaser's tactics. Both used specific tactics to win wars, like Alexander's line up with sharp spears. Alexander conquered many areas and controlled them. Rome also conquered many areas, but instead let them be ran as city-states. The large land areas that both empires owned allowed them to each have a lot of agriculutre, therefore causeing them to have strong economies. Through a good militray and strong governing skills both empires were successful.

Europe would be different today . Hannibal commanded an army from Carthage controlled in Spain. He used elephants in war just like Asoka did. One was able to hear the elephant from, miles awy. Sincek it was very cold many of the elephants and them soliders dies. Another reason why they lost the battle was he had to retuen home to help to defend/ his native land when Roman soliders invaded Africa. But if they had won the war; Latin might have not became as popular as it is. Italy today might bej an Islamic nation and Christianity might not have been spreaded as widely as it is today. They might have also been able to invade southern Europe and conquer it. The building structure woud be of Islamic influence like things such as a mosque.

Slavery was the opposite in Mesopotamia than in Europe. In Europe the slaves were treated horribly. They were beatin, chained, and they were payed very poorly. They were also treated less in society. Also; hey were not let go until they were 35 years old. Thhis really meant that they were going to s.laves for most of their lives baecause most of the people back then did not live but up the age of 35. In Mesopotamia the slaves were treated fairly. Maany people became slaves if they were prisoners of war, they commitjed a crime, or they owed a debt. Once they payed the debt off tbhey were usually set free.

The growth of Rome was very similar to Alexander the Great. Aalexander the Great conquered alot of territories with his very strategic plans. He was very smart and his plans were always accomplished. In Rome Julius Caeser did the same thing. He was able conquer alot of land but the only difference was that he did not have the favor of the people.

  19. The Punic wars help expand the Roman empire. But if they did not win the wars the Roman empire would not have been what it was. For instance the empire would have fallen a lot quicker because they did not have a strong military force. Slaves in Rome and Greece wee forced labor because they were prisoners of war. In Mesoptamia and Egypt the slaves worked to pay off debt. They also worked because they were criminals. The masters would let them free right before it was time for hem to die. The Roman empire and Alexander the great. They both conquered vast amounts of land and had governors rule over that specific part. It strength the empire and made it more invincible.

Rome losing the second Punic War would change much of the world. Rome united much of the world and established many trade routes. However the greatest change would appear in religion. In a world where Christianity is the dominant religion it would change to a dominance in Islam. Christianity was spread throughout many Roman territories. The Byzantine empire is perhaps credited the most with spreading Christianity. Carthage comes from a region that was later predominantly Muslim. Carthage may have created an empire as vast as Rome that would have spread Islam instead of Christianity.

In Mesopotamia slaves were prisoners of war, and people who could not pay off their debts. Mesopotamian slaves were mainly treated as lower class and it was more like an occupation than slavery. In Rome being someone's slave was like being someone's property. Most people made slaves were prisoners of war. However brutally slaves were treated in Rome it was still traditional to free them at the age of 35.

Rome and Alexander the Great had very similar empires. They both employed unique effective tactics to conquer various lands. Rome became a complete war machine after the win over Carthage. The use of city states was effective in expanding the empire. This however had one major flaw in Rome that Alexander did not have. In Rome the armies were more loyal to generals than leaders. Rome also primarily conquered by generals and had multiple leaders at one time. Alexander ran his armies solely on his own with the use of generals. The final decision however rested with him.

Europe would be very different today. If Carthage had won the second war they would have had a lot of control over North Africa and Europe. Islam could be an important cultural and religious difference. Political structures like their buildings the Romans built would also have been destroyed.

A major contrast in the slaves from Rome with the slaves from Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece is the age people get enslaved. In Mesopotamia, Greece, Egypt people start at a young age. They were also slaves from wars or slaves who were in debt. In Rome slaves were kept until they died. No one could release them.

Rome under Caeser's control was unconquerable. After marching down from Gaul he took over the Roman empire and spread it very far all over Western Europe. Caeser was a huge impact in the growth of Rome. Alexander the Great was very intelligent in spreading his empire by defeating the Persian empire. Also to the Han dynasty controlled by Han Wudi was able to spread his empire by dafeating the Xiongnu who were nomadic herders who tried to over take the Han dynasty.

Euorpe would be totally different if Carthage won the second Punic War. Rome would not practice the Roman Catholic religion as they becasue the area would culturally and politically been more like North Africa. This would have happened if Hannibal would have captured Rome and not have returned home. Also another difference would have been the trade routes. Also slaves in Rome were slaves at an early age and could only be relaease when manumission or died.

If Rome had lost the Punic war, then the world that we know would be totally different. Carthage would probally have taken over Rome's territory and would become a powerful nation. If Rome would have lost then that ment no advanced trade routes. Another big change would have been the religion. Rome was dominently Christian, so if Carthage would have won the Islam would become the main religion in the region. Other things will change like culture, government, and the way of life.

Mesopotamia's slaves were predominantly debotors and war prisonors. They were treated as the lower class. It was more like a job or an occupation for them. In Rome, the slaves were treated horribly. They would beat them or even kill them. They would be slaves until the age of thirty-five, if they would live that long.

Alexander the Great conquered vast lands, as so did Rome. They both had strategies to conquer these lands. However, in Rome, there was much respect and loyalty to the army and its generals, not the leaders. This is why Rome was ruled by a number of generals. All in all, Alexander and the Roman Empire both conquered a large percentage of the northern- eastern hemisphere.

  24. If Carthage had won the second Punic War, Europe would be very distanced from today's europe. Back then, the Roman Empire filled up most of Europe. They were capable of building and devloping new easier, faster trade routes. However, there wouldn;t be an advanced trade route if Carthageans won the war. Also, the Europe continent wouldn't be so developed like today's Europe.

    2. The treatment of slave in Rome was different compared to the treatments in Egpyt,Greece, Mesopotamia, and America. In Rome, the slaves were treate same as the properties. Also, other civilzations' slaves were POW or debtors whereas Rome's slaves were not, and most of them were enslved until they died.

The growth of Rome was very similar to Alexander the Great. First, they both had conquered many territories. They were both the biggest, powerful, and most influencial empires in the world. Similar to Alexander, Caesar of Rome was very strategical intelligent and respected men with many followers. Due to their conquered treasures, architects, and technology, they were able to grow big and powerful in a short period of time

In many ways Europe would have been different if Carthage had won the Second Punic War. For starters the areas may have been predominantly Islamic rather than Roman Catholic because of the different spreads of people. Another difference would be the areas culture and political status. If Hannibal had succeeded during the Punic War he may have influenced the area. Hannibal's African cultural ways would have caused many changes in the way the land may have looked today. The encounters and interactions between people may have been different as well. Trade routes would cause new people to enter the area, interacting and influencing the people of Europe.

Indeed there was a difference in the slaves of Rome and the slaves of other civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, or Greece. Roman slaves were initially put into slavery early and stayed there for life. Roman slaves were also beaten and punished more frequently than any other society. In Mesopotamia, a person became a slave if they were a prisoner of war or if they owed any debts that they couldn't pay back on their own at the time. Slaves in these other societies were not treated as harsh and bad. The beatings that Mesopotamian slaves got would not cause them to stop working like in Rome. Roman slaves were beaten so bad that there conditions may cause them to be unable to work.

Just as Alexander the Great conquered the many lands around him, Rome spread its influence over several regions expanding its empire. Alexander the Great had many strategies that helped him in conquering lands. Rome on the other hand conquered many areas and claimed that land. Rome allowed their conquered areas to remain as city-states whereas Alexander the Great completely dominated the regions in which he conquered. There were some advantages for both of these empires. They were able to trade with each other and gain any necessary supplies.

  26. If Carthage would have won the Second Punic War, Europe would be different in many ways. First of all we would see more African culture in and mixed with that of the Europeans. This also means that the dominant religion would be Islam instead of Christianity. In addition to that, the African culture would also spread throughout the world due to the control of the Mediterranean Sea trade routes.

The treatment of slaves were different in Rome from that of other ancient civilizations. In other places such as Mesopotamia, people became slaves due to their debts. They were treated nicely and set free after their debts were cleared. The Roman slaves were totally different. The slave owners felt as if they owned the slave just as one owns some property. The masters would beat their slaves and could careless if they died.

The growth of the Roman Empire is similar to that of Alexander the Great's empire. First similarity is that both were able to use war tactics to conquer many lands and expand on their empire. Also they had great leaders such as Alexander the Great and for the Romans Julius Caesar. They also had a nice government and loyal armies.

  27. 1. If had one the Second Punic war, that would have made a huge impact. The base of the civilization would be much different. It would be more of the lifestyle or basis that people live by in Africa, more specifically North Africa. The Islamic culture would be more prominent during this time. Basically, it would highly impact the cultures and religions.
    2. The slavery in both places are very different. The slaves in Rome were a very important part of the economy. The slaves in Rome were held till the age of 35. They were beaten alot, and if they died or were beat to death, they get replaced easy like they are nothing. Slaves in rome were born into slavery. On the other hand, in Mesopotamia, one usually became a slave if they owed a debt of some sort.
    3. Alexander the Great and Julius Ceaser were both great conquerers, They conquered many lands and they were very popular during their reign. Rome had powerful people to rule over them, Ancient Egypt had some but they did not conquer as many lands and people.

  28. Europe would be completely different if Carthage would have won the Second Punic War. One major change would the the dominance of Islam in Europe instead of Christianity. By their control of the major sea trade routes in the Mediterranean Sea, they would have expanded the African culture and Islamic ideology throughout the world.

Slaves were treated different throughout the world. In Rome slaves were treated harshly. Their owners showed them no mercy and looked upon them as their own property. Slaves there were beat and even killed, but the owners did not care because they could just replace them. Unlike the Romans other places treated slaves much better. Slaves in other places were rarely killed. Most slaves became slaves temporarily to repay debt. As soon as they were free of debt they were set free again.

Growth Alexander the Great's Empire is similary to that of the Romans. Both had large armies that were loyal to their ruler. Also thanks to great warriors like Alexander and Julius Caesar the empires were able to quickly expand greatly. This was possible due to their great war tactics. Also a good government system allowed both of them to grow larger.

Assuming that Carthage had won the Second Punic war European society would be completely altered. Instead of Europe standing on its own as a continent it would merely be an extension of northern Africa. This meant that strong attributes of North African society would have flourished in Europe. For instance Islam would be standing as the dominant religion through out Europe instead of Catholicism or Christianity. This also meant that with the adaption of Islam linguistically Europeans would have had to adopt Arabic as their language.

Although, both societies had slavery the manner in which they went about enslaving and maintaing them were different. The population of slaves in Mesopotamia comprised of debtors and war prisoners. Since some slaves had debts to pay they were not severely beaten as it was their job to work off the debt. However slavery in Roman society was drastically different. Slavery started out at a young age as the Roman believed individuals had a short life span (only lived till 35). In contrast to Mesopotamia slaves in Rome they were brutally beaten and punished severely.

Like Rome, Alexander the Great successfully was able to flourish into an empire in a similar manner. Just as Alexander the Great was adept in strategic planning and had a firm grasp on military tactics the Romans were equally skilled. This enabled them both to expand their empires by conquering land. Romans used their conquered land and eventually established city-states. However the armies differed as Roman armies payed their allegiance to their general instead of their leaders, whereas armies under Alexander payed their full devotion to Alexander who controlled his army's every decision.

  30. 1. Europe today would be completely different if Carthage won the 2nd Punic War. First of all, Christianity would not be diffused into much of Europe. Instead, Islam would remain as well as other religions. Second of all, Europe may not even exist in the same regions. The language and political issue of the people would completely change. It's not positive of what would happen to certain regions, who would take over, or the influence that could possibly change everything.
Things would definitely be different, and African influence would be more noticeable.

    2. In Rome, slaves were treated as African slaves were in the south of the U.S.A. They were treated harsh, like property, often beat and sold. Slaves belonged to the owner for their entire life, they were never released into freedom. In comparison to Mesopotamia, slaves were mainly POW or debtors. They were released if they paid their debt. They weren't treated harshly and were given an opportunity for freedom.

    3. Rome and Alexander the Great are very similar. They share the common of conquering many different civilizations. They both had allies as well as enemies. Both were invaded and attacked cities. Alexander the Great used smart strategies in order to be victorious, as well as many Roman leaders. Both economies relied on the trade between the conquered and allied lands. They also shared a strong army in which expanded their empire further into their region.

  31. Roman culture probably wouldn't have survived to this present day, maybe greek culture too. Italy may have actually become part of Africa, and African culture may have spread, even, throuought Europe. Or, some parts of Europe may continue to be the same way that it is right now, but some areas of Europe, for example, Italy, may have, now, people may call New Carthage or something similar to that, if the Carthage won the Second Punic War.

The treatment of slaves in Rome was different, but in some ways, similar to the treatment of slaves in America (before the Civil War). In my opinion, the treatment of slaves in America was worse. It was thought that in Rome, about 25 to 30 percent of the roman people were slaves. In America (1800), the percentage of slaves were about 17 to 18 percent. In Rome, the slaves sometimes got opportunity to leave the area to go with their masters. But in America, slaves were not allowed to LEAVE the plantation. In America, both male and female had to do similar amounts of work, but in rome, slavery was not as bad for the females.

The growth of Rome and the growth of alexander the great's empire were both massive. Strategies of these empires caused these empires to grow great in size, power, and riches. The Roman caesar used alexander the great's tactics to conquer rome and other areas in the same region. Both of the empires even had good government structure, which helped the empires to grow even larger.
